Wally Charron was born in Montreal and attended St. Lamber High School. Charron enlistged in the Navy during World War II, and played end for the Montreal Navy team (H.M.C.S Donnacona-St. Hyachinthe), sometimes referred to as the Navy Combines. The Navy team went on to win the Grey Cup in 1944.
