Gerhart had a brief tryout with the Buffalo Bills of the NFL in 1990. After his rlease he played two seasons wtih the Sacremetno Surge of the WLAF (1991-92). Gerhart joined the Sacremento Goldminers of the CFL as a free agent in March, of 1994. A natural linebacker, Gerhart saw action at safety wit hthe Goldminers and with San Antonio in 1995 when the franchise shifted to Texas. Gerhart became a free agent with the folding of the American based teams and signed with Hamilton in March of 1996 and had recorded 70 tackles for the Tiger-Cats in 1996. Gerhart was released by Hamilton in March of 1997 and did not play that season. Edmonton signed Gerhart in January of 1998, but he only played one game for the Esks.
