Jim McKean

Jim McKean was a local standout in high school (Monklands High) and junior (NDG Maple Leafs) football. He played parts of two seasons with the Alouettes in 1964 and 1965, splitting time with the CFL team and the Maple Leafs. Primarily a backup quarterback and punter, he was unable to secure a regular position and after struggling to become a defensive halfback in 1966, he was released by the Alouettes on July 29 1966. The following month he was picked up by the Saskatchewan Roughriders to be their punter and to serve as #3 QB behind Ron Lancaster and Bruce Bennett. On August 28th against the Lions he was benched part way through the game in favour of Dale West, and subsequently released before the end of the season.
In 1967 McKean returned to Montreal to play in the Montreal Lakeshore Touch Football League, prior to starting a career in 1970 as a professional baseball umpire. By 1973 he had made it to the major leagues and in 2002 was named as a supervisor of umpires for the American League.
