Roland (Buddy) Payne

Buddy Payne played college ball at North Carolina and was drafted in the eighth round of the 1958 NFL draft by the Washington Redsskins.  The offensive end came north to the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1958 and played two games, making three catches.  After leaving football, Payne had a very successfull career as a lawyer in Florida.  Buddy Payne passed away on November 19, 2011 at the age of 75.

PAYNE, ROLAND W. "BUDDY"JR., Buddy Payne passed away on November 19, 2011, in Dade City, Florida, due to complications following hip surgery, at the age of 75. He was a long-time resident of South Florida and an accomplished trial lawyer. Buddy was born on March 16, 1936, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he played varsity football and was awarded the Patterson Medal as Outstanding Student Athlete. After a brief professional football career in the Canadian Football League, Buddy earned his law degree from Stetson University. He was a founding member of the law firm of Spence, Payne, Masington and Grossman in Miami, where he spent the majority of his professional career. He was the founding president of the Miami-Dade Justice Association (formerly the Dade County Trial Lawyers Association), and a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was also a member of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and the American Board of Trial Advocates. Buddy was selected as among the Best Lawyers in America and Leading Attorneys in America. He loved boating in South Florida and in the Bahamas. He had recently moved to Dade City with his wife of four years, Gloria Elwell Payne. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children from his previous marriage, Darrell, Preston Scanlon, Darby Plummer, Clinton, and 15 grandchildren. At Buddy's request, there will not be a memorial service, however Buddy's children are welcoming friends at Clintons home at 1200 Country Club Prado, Coral Gables, Florida, on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to honor Buddy's memory by making a donation to the charity of your choice.
