Ryan was a third round draft pick of Winnipeg in the 2004 CFL college draft out of the University of Regina. In his rookie season, Ryan had a very respectable a 43.2 yard punting average, and then exploded in 2005 with a 50.6 yard average, setting a CFL record. Ryan's numbers got the attention of the NFL and Ryan signed with Green Bay of the NFL for the 2006 season.
