Doug Smith

Doug Smith played mainly halfback and flying wing, the latter translating into a flanker or slotback in modern terms.  Smith was also an excellent punter.  Smith was from Stratford, Ontario and attended Stratford Collegiate.  Smith started his senior career with the Kitchener-Waterloo Panthers of the ORFU in 1942 where he established a reputation as a speedy and shifty running back. Coach Brian Timmis brought Smith to Hamilton in 1943 to play for the Wildcats.  Smith shared the backfield and punting duties with the great Joe Krol, and the Wildcats would go on to win the Grey Cup that season. Smith in fact scored the first touchdown of the game on a pass from Krol. Smith was in the Canadian Navy in 1944 and 1945, and possibly played with the Halifax Navy team that competed in the Navy playoffs (a Montreal Navy team won the Grey Cup in 1944).  Smith returned to Hamilton after the war and played four seasons for the Hamilton Tigers from 1946 to 1949.  The Tigers played in the IRFU / Big Four, but in a dispute with the league over import Frank Filchock, the Tigers switched to the ORFU in 1948 and 1949 while the Wildcats moved to the Big Four. The Tigers won the ORFU in 1949 and lost to the Montreal Alouettes in the East Final with Montreal going on to win the Grey Cup that season.  In an ironic twist, the Alouettes were led by the same Frank Filchock at quarterback.  In 1950, Smith joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who were formed by combining the Tigers and the Wildcats.
