Gerry Sternberg

Gerry Sternberg played his college football at the University of Toronto where he was a OUAA all-star at both running back and defensive back.  Sternbergs was originally drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in the first round of the 1965 CFL college draft, but was released and signed by Montreal. Sternberg played two seaons for the Alouettes (1966-67), mainly as a receiver where he had 11 and 16 catches in those two seasons.  Sternberg took a year off from football in 1968 to concentrate on his law studies at prestigious Osgoode Hall and then returned to the CFL in 1969 with the Toronto Argonauts.  Sternberg played two and a half seasons for the Argos, seeing action mainly now as a defensive back and on the suicide squad as returning punts was sometimes referred to since there was no blocking back then.  Sternbarg had one interception in 1969 and three more in 1970 for Toronto.  As a punt returner, he was second in the East in punt return yards in 1969 with 311 and third in 1970 with 308.  Sternberg split the 1971 season between Toronto and Hamilton and accomplished something rare in the CFL, playing 15 games in a 14 game season.  Sternberg had a pair of interceptions that season to go with three fumble recoveries.  In 1972, Sternberg set a new personal high with 4 interceptions while his 299 punt return yards was third best in the East.  Sternberg returned to the Argos for his final season in 1973 in a trade that sent Sternbergand linebacker Mike Blum to Toronto for defensive back Lewis Porter and running back Dave Cramner. Sternberg matched his career high with another 4 interceptions.  In total, Sternberg had 14 career interceptions.  The move to Hamilton in part way through 1971 cost Sternberg a trip to the Grey Cup that season with the Argos, though Toronto lost anyway.  Sternberg got to the Grey Cup though in 1972 with Hamilton and won it.  Sternberg was elected to the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.  In case you ware wondering if Sternberg got his law degree, he did and in a bit of an ironic twist was one of the lawyers for Greg Barton when he sued the Toronto Argonauts for whom both had played.  From Grey Cup to the Supreme Court!
