John Varone

John Varone was a running back and linebacker from the University of Miami. (1955-58). Varone was drafted in the fourth round of the 1958 NFL college draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Varone joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1958. Varone saw a fair amount of action on offence in his rookie season with 65 carries for 250 yards, scoring a pair of touchdowns. Varonealso had three fumble recoveries in that rookie season.  In 1959, Varone was used mainly on defence as he had only two carries.  Defensively, however, Varone recorded two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

After his playing career was over, Varone was a teacher and high school football coach from 1961 to 1989. John Varone passed away on October 11, 2011
