Darrell Royal

 

Darrell Royal played football at Oklahoma (1946-49) and started his coaching career the following year. Royal served as an assistant coach with North Carolina State in 1950, with Tulsa in 1951 amd <ossosso[[o State in 1952. Royal got his first head coaching job in Canada with the Edmonton Eskimos in 1953. In his only season in Canada, Royal compiled an impressive 12-4 record.

From Edmonont, Royal returned to the States. He served as the head coach at Mississippi State for two years (1954-55) and Washington in 1955. It was with the University of Texas that Royal earned his fame as the head coach from 1957 to 1976. In his time at Texas, Royal commpiled a 167-47-5 record, won two national championships (1963 and 1969), 11 Southwest Conference championships and 10 Cotton Bowl victories. In 1983, Royal was named to the University of Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

Darrell Royal passed away on November 7, 2012.
