Butch Avinger

[Clarence Edmund Avinger]

Clarence (Butch) Avinger was a star quarterback with the Crimson Tide of Alabama from 948-50).  Avinger was a first round pick of the PIttsburgh Steelers of the NFL in the 1951 draft, but then spent a year in the U.S. Army, playing with the Fort Jackson, SC team as a guard.  After his release from the army, Avinger elected to sign with the Saskatchewan in 1952.  Avinger was an all-purpose player for the Riders, as he saw action as a running back, backed up at QB, did the punting and led the West in ainterceptions with 8 as a defensive back.  In 1953, Avinger returned to the States and played with the New YOrk Giants for one season. Butch Avinger passed away on August 20, 2008.
