Ernie Becker played highschool football in Toronto and then went on to play for Toronto Balmy Beach and the Toronto Indians in the ORFU (Ontario Rugby Football League) from 1944 to 1948*. There is no record of Beker for 1949. In 1950, Beckert was picked up by theMontreal Alouettes when injuries struc, but does not appear to have actually dressed for any games. Beckert went out West in 1951. Becker is listed on some Calgary Stampeder all-time rosters for 1951, but does not appear to have played in any regular season games for the Stamps**. Becker did play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1951 as a fulback as the team won the West before losing the Grey Cup to Ottawa. Becker would also play for Winnipeg in 952 and 1953***. Becker remained active in football after his playing career ended, serving as the coach for Te Voc High School (Winnipeg). Becker was also an excellent swimmer, holding numerous records and winning numerous Canadian championships in his youth. Becker went onto a 39 year career as a swimming professiona. Ernie Becker died on December 29, 2007. * In 1948, the Beachesandthe Indians merged and for that one season, theteam was called the Toronto Balmy Beaches Indians then reverted back to being just the Toronto Balmy Beach. ** There are no official games played stats for the West until 1964. Unofficial numbers from the CFL Encyclopedia by Tod Maher and Bob Gill don't show Becker playing for Calgary in 1951. *** Some Winnipeg all-timerosters list Becker for 1954, but he is not listed for that year by Maher and Gill. Note - the obituary below indicates that Becker also played fortheToronto argonauts, but this can not be confirmed. The Argos do not list him on their all-time roster.
