The "Golden Boy" was one of the greatest stars of Canadian football in the 1930s and 1940s.  Born in Windsor, Ontario, Golab starred for Kenedy Collegiate in Windsor.  Lacking enough credits to to to Western Ontario with fellow Windsor highschool star Joe Krol, Golab started his senior / professional career with the Sarnia Imperials of the Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU) in 1938.  Golab and the Imperials won the ORFU title in 1938 and that go the attentoin of several Big Four (the future East division of the modern CFL)teams including Ottawa who managed t oconvince him to join them in 1939.

Golab played nine seasons for the Riders (1939-41 and 1945-50), with a little thing called World War II interupting his time with the Riders.  In 1942, with the war on, Golab played for the Ottawa Uplands RCAF team in a special three team Ottawa city league. As a halfback and flying wing (the modern term would be flanker or maybe slot back), Golab won five East All-Stars in 1939, 1940, 1945, 1947 and 1948. Golab played in four Grey Cups (1939, 1940, 1941 and 1948), winning one cup with Ottawa in 1940. Golab won the Jeff Russell Trophy in 1941 as the outstanding player in the Big Four.  Golab was also named the Canadian Press top athlete and won the Lionel Conacher trophy in 1941. After retiring as a player, Golab stayed active in football as a coach and manager.  In 1952 and 1953, Golab coached the Hamilton Panthers Intermediate team, and from 1954-58 he coach the Royal Military College at Kingston team. Golab thrughout this time continued to serve in the RCAF. Golab later served as the General Manager of the Montreal Alouettes for two seasons from 1968 to 1969. Golab's time with the Alouettes ended in 1970 when Sam Berger bought the team and brought in former Alouette Red O'Quinn as his GM to replace Golab

Golab has received numerous honours since his retirement.  In 1964, he was selected to the Canadian Football hall of Fame, in 1975 he was selected for the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and in 1984, Golab was named a member of the Order of Canada.
