Eric Verge (Tammy) Hamber

Tammyh Hamber was a multi-sport athlete who also participated in both hockey and rowing besides football. Humber played for St. John's College in Winnipeg from 1896 to 1901 and 1904.  Humber then joined the Toronto Argonauts for 1902-03 where he captained the team. Hamber rejoined the Argnonauts late in 1904 and also was with them for one final season in 1905 [Winnipeg Free Press].

Tammy's biggest hockey moment was when he played for the Winnipeg Rowing Club in the Stanley Cup challenge against the Ottawa Silver Seven in 1903-04. There was controversy over Tammy's participation because he had not qualified to play in the Stanley Cup – he didn’t play in the western playoffs and then he joined the Rowing Club in Ottawa.

In the water, Tammy was a member of the Winnipeg Rowing Club and later joined the Argonauts Henley Rowing Team.

Tammy's professional career was in banking (Dominion Bank of Canada). In April 1902 he was transferred to Toronto. Over the next few years, promotions within the bank had him moving between Winnipeg, Toronto, London and in March 1906 he wound up in Calgary. He reached the pinnacle of the organization in January 1913 when he was named Director of the Dominion Bank.

From 1936-1941, Eric W. Hamber served as the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia. From 1944-1951 he was the Chancellor of UBC.

He passed away on January 10, 1960 at the age of 80.

[Note:  The Toronto All-Time roster lists Harold Hamber, with the nickname Tammy and has him playing in 1905-06.  Harold is the younger brother of Eric.   This appears to be in error as Tammy was Eric's nickname.  The years listed also appear to be incorrect.]
