Highsmith played two years in the AFL (1968-69) with the Denver Broncos before coming to the CFL in 1970 to join the Montreal Alouettes. After two years with the Als (1970-71), Highsmith returned to the States, and played with Houston in 1972. Highsmith returned to Montreal in 1973, but played only one game. After being out of the CFL for two seasons Highsmith return and played for the Toronto Argonauts in 1976 and 1977.
