Johnson joined the Calgary Stampeders in 1978, playing eight games as the backup to John Hufnagel. In 1979, Johnson took over the #1 duties from Hurnagel, completing 56.4% of his 312 passes for 2344 yards. Johnson also had a very impressive 19 to 8 touchdown to interception ratio that year. Things got better in 1980, with Johnson throwing for 3019 yards and completing 56% of his passes. 1981 started off much the same way, but after 12 games, Johnson was traded to Montreal to replace the highly touted and highly failed Vince Ferregamo experiment. Between Montreal and Calgary, Johnson threw for 3364 yards in 15 games. Johnson's CFL career ended abruptly in 1982 as he appeared in only two games for Montreal. After leaving the CFL, Johnson played for the Memphis Showboats of the USFL in 1984 Note: Johnson's birthdate in most CFL publications is January 5, 1951, but there are some sources with conflicting dates. Some sources have listed it as January 15, 1951, May 1, 1951 and June 12, 1951! The January 5th date is the most commonly cited and so it is used here.
