Leon McQuay

Leon McQuay was a speedy running back out of the University of Tampa.  A two-time small school All-American, McQuay skipped his senior year to sign with the Argos. McQuay had an outstanding rookiee season as he 977 yards in just 12 games with a 7.1 yard average.  McQuay led the East in rushing, was named to the Easern All-Star team and was the runner-up for the most OUstanding Player award in the CFL.   Unfortunately, McQuay will be forever villified by Argo fans for his fumble in the 1971 Grey Cup.  Trailing Calgary by 3 points, Toronto had the ball deep in the Stampeder end late in the fourth quarter.  It looked like the Argos would at least tie up the game with a fieldgoal, but McQuay slipped on the wet field and fumbled.  McQuay returned to Toronto in 1972 and had a decent season with 745 yards rushing. IN 1973, McQuay played only one game for the Argos before being traded west to Calgary for lineman Granville Liggins, where he only played in two games and was not the same player.  McQuay was drafted by the New York Giants of the NFL in 1973 and he went South to play in the NFL with New York, New England and New Orleans betweeen 1974 and 1976.  In 1977, McQuay returned to Toronto and played in 7 games, running for 307 yards.
