Dave Raimey

You can divide Dave Raimey's ten year career into two parts in a couple of different ways.  In terms of teams, Raimey spent 4 and bit seasons with Winnipeg and the last 5 and a bit with Toronto.  In terms of position, Raimey spent the first six years as one of th best running backs in the CFL and the last four as a very good defensive back.  Raimey had an outstanding rookie season with the Bombers in 1965, rushing for 1052 yards and an outstanding 8.1 yard average, catching 20 passes for 218 more yards and also leading the West in kickoff returns with 635 yards.  Raimey improved on his rushing and receiving figures in 1966 as he rushed for 1223 yards with a 6.5 yard average and caught 28 passes for another 389 yards.  In the next two seasons, Raimey's rushing totals dropped to 772 in 1967 and 787 in 1968, but he was also used more as receiver with 39 and 43 receptions.  In both years, he also led the west in kickoff returns.  Early in the 1969 season, Raimey was traded to Toronto in a blockbuser deal that brought a much needed top line QB to Winnipeg in Wally Gabler.  Despite only playing 12 games combined with the two teams, Raimey ran for another 829 yards.  After adding another 839 yards rushing in 1970, Raimey found himself switched to a defensive back for the 1971 season.  Toronto has an oustandng young speedster in Leon McQuay and so moved Raimey to defensive back to make room for the younger player.  Raimey played the next four seasons and defensive back, and while he was never named an All-Star, he more than held his own.  In the four seasons from 1971 to 1974, Raimey intercepted a total of 15 passes, running two of them back for toudhdowns.  From the running back half of his career, Raimey had 5 consecutive divisional All-Star awards (1965 to 1969) and won All-Canadian honours in 1966 and 1969. Raimey finished with 5529 yards career rushing and was elected to the Canadian Football Hall-of-Fame in 2000.
