Runge was a fourth round draft pick by the Edmonton Eskimos in 1984 and played 16 games in his rookie season. While he did not record a pass reception in his rookie season, Runge contributed on special teams and recovered his own teams kickoff which he ran for a 33 yard gain. Runge started to see more action offensively in 1985 and after seven games had 8 catches before being traded to Calgary for LB Craig Shaffer. Runge added another 16 catches with t o finish with 24 for the season.
