Smith had stints with the Dallas Cowboys and the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL before joining Toronto as a free-agent in May of 1986.  In his rookie season with the Argos, Smith played 11 games and caught 36 passes.  Smith then reeled off five straight Eastern All-Star honours from 1987 to 1991, taking All-Canadian honours in 1987 and again in 1990.  In four of those seasons, Smith topped the thousand yard mark in receiving: 1392 in 1987, 1306 in 1988, 1820 in 1990 and 1399 in 1991.  In his best season in 1990, Smith scored 20 touchdowns receiving.  Smith was part of a huge trade with Edmonton in January, 1993.  He was send to Edmonton along with WR Eddie Brown, QB Rickey Foggie, LB Bruce Dickson, SB J.P. Izquado, DL Leonard Johnson and DB Don Wilson for DL Cameron Brouseau, SB Craig Ellis, QB Tracy Ham, LB John Davis, CB Enis Jackson, RB Chris Johnston, DB Travis Oliver and WR Ken Winey.  Smith was released by Edmonton in August of 1993.  He later signed with the expansion Shreveport Pirates, in 1994, but did not play any games for them. Smith finished his outstanding career for 476 yards and 8236 yards.
