Monte Charles

Monte Charles was born in Vicksburg, Michigan and went on to attend and play linebacker and fullbback at Hillsdale College and Michigan State.  Charles was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1951, but was released before playing any regular season games.  Charles played semi-pro football for three years and then started his coaching career with nine years in the Detroit high school system.  In 1964, charles moved up to college football as an assistant at Northern Illinois, and then in 1966 he got his first college head coaching job at Wisconsin - Plateville.  Charles first came to the CFL in 1969, where he served as an assistant coach with the winnipeg Blue Bombers along with Joe Faragalli.  Charles then returned to the States where he served as head coach for Wisconsin Superior and Wisconsin Stevens Point for seven seasons.  In 1981, Charles returned to the CFL as an assistant coach with Saskatchewan, and was reunited with Faragalli who was th ehead coach at the time.  After three years with the Green and White, Charles spent one year as the Director of Player Personel with Hamilton in 1984.  In 1987, charles was reunited one more time with Faragalli in Montreal, but the Alouettes folded just before the season started. Charles returned to the states and coached and worked at Wisconsin Stevens Point. Charles has been selected for a number of Hall of Fames including the Wisconsin Coaches HOF, Vicksburgh Highschool HOF and the Wisconsin Stevens Point HOF. Monte Charles passed away on May 8, 1992
