After playing high school football in Salem, VA and went on to start at center at Carson-Newman. Sweet started his coaching career as a graduate assistant with Tenassee Tech in 1997 and had numerous stops as an assistant coach in the college ranks before coming to the CFL.

Much of Sweet's colege coaching experience was with the offensive line and that was his first CFL job with t he Calgary Stampeders in 2007. Sweet remained with the Stamps through the 2011 season and the Stampeders had a strong running game helped by Sweet's offensive line. In 2012, Sweet joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders as their offensive line and running game coach. Sweet then moved to Edmonton in 2013 as their offensive line coach and in 2014 took the same job with the Montreal Alouettes.
