John Conroy was born in Vancouver, but raised in Southern California. His birthplace qualified him as a non-import, and after playing football at Mt. San Antonio, Junior College, he was signed by the Montreal Alouettes. Conroy recoreded three interceptions in his rookie season in 1961, and would go on to play three seasons for th eAls from 1961-63 as a defensive back and backup quarterback. John Conroy is the brother of Jim Conroy who was an all-star linebacker with the Ottawa Rough Riders.
