For the third season in a row, the Toronto Argonauts did not play in 1897 over a dispute with the ORFU over player eligibility. The Lornes, who had replaced the Argos in the two previous seasons merged with the Toronto A.C. to form a team known as the Toronto A.C. Lornes.

No regular season. Teams played a series of playoff games.
